40 Days with Jesus - Part 4: His Ministry, My Ministry

May 14, 2017 Pastor: Ryan Rice Series: 40 Days with Jesus

Scripture: Mark 2:1–2:12

His Ministry

Jesus came to proclaim that the kingdom of God is here. His ministry centered around the Good News of God. Likewise, the way we serve should center around Jesus’ ministry, the proclamation of God’s word and the ministry of Jesus. Mark 2:1-12 shows how Jesus takes a tragic situation and uses it for His purpose. Jesus demonstrated his authority and deity by offering forgiveness to the paralytic. It was an act of God’s reconciliation and freeing from the divine penalty of sin. This was considered blasphemy by some and was a serious crime, punishable by death. Jesus ministry speaks to the heart. God looks at our hearts and offers grace and forgiveness that cannot be earned, but is received by faith. Forgiveness of sin has no visible proof, but when Jesus told the paralytic to get up and walk it was visible the evidence of forgiveness.

Our Ministry

Your ministry is a witness of the work of God in your life. “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,” Colossians 3:23. Jesus taught the truth about God and gave practical instructions about how to live. He also made the Gospel real by feeding the poor and healing the lame. Ministry should focus around meeting the real needs of others through teaching, coaching them and consulting. Just as young children need to be taught how to live, a new believer needs to be taught the truths of the Gospel. As they mature, they understand the basics, but need ongoing coaching to grow. At maturity, you become a consultant when questions and issues arise. Look at the disciples. Jesus brought them together and taught them. He gave them the tools to continue His ministry and then sent the Holy Spirit to empower them and help spread the Gospel throughout the world. There are many opportunities to serve others and we need to move beyond the doors of the church and reach out into our community.
