Topic: Romans Scripture: Romans 6:4–6:4

MANY PEOPLE TODAY LIVE WITH A VICTIM MENTALITY

Victims often..

Act like the world is against them Play the Blame GameThey often focus on negativity

Some Common Reasons / Excuses

Family Background / Genetics

Example: I am a workaholic b/c my Dad was I have anger problems b/c I come from a family of anger I abuse because my father abused I struggle with addiction because I grew up in a home like this

 >Granted, some of us have higher dispositions to a particular sin but we can’t make an excuse and say “it’s my destiny.” That’s a cop out.

Life Experiences

childhood work death divorce

> Our tragedies don’t have to determine our present or future.

Results of living like a victim:

Hopelessness PowerlessFriendless

PAUL’S MESSAGE & METAPHOR: The apostle Paul gives the analogy of sin, being like a mean task master, that keeps people enslaved, or chained to sin, like victims, Paul’s gospel message was being criticized. People were saying that this gospel of grace, would not liberate people from sin but it would give them a license to sin. This is not the case at all, here we will learn that grace liberates us.

Gospel of Grace

Grace = Liberation from sin Grace ≠ License to sin

3 REASONS WHY WE ARE NOT VICTIMS, CHAINED TO SIN

#1 GRACE BRINGS LIBERATION (6,14)

We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (Romans 6:6)

For sin will have no dominion over you,... (Romans 6:14)

Identify excuses you have made for sin in your life.

#2 GRACE GIVES NEW LIFE (3-11)

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Regeneration: A secret act of God in which he imparts new spiritual life to us; sometimes called “being born again.” Dr. Grudem

..We too might walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4)

“Dead to sin” means, you are not chained, enslaved, or dominated by sin (6,11a)“Alive in Christ” means; I have new life, hope and future, a new master. (4b,11)

..We too might walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4)

Take initiative to get to know others & being known by others in the church.

#3 GRACE CONQUERED SIN BUT YOU HAVE CHOICES (12-14)

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions... (12)

Do not present your members to sin.. but present yourselves to God...(13)

Command not to sin: “Let not sin reign” means to rule, like a Tyrant, slave master. (12)

~ Moses led Israelites out of Slavery, from Egypt and when they were in wilderness wandering, for years, they often longed to go back, (16:3,17:3)

Chose not to sin: “Present yourself”means a decision of the will to do something (13)

Do not present yourself to sin (13a)Present yourself to God (13b)

Conquered sin was done by God’s grace: sin will have no dominion over you (14)

Look more to God’s promises than your problems
