UNITED BY FAITH

JUSTIFIED BY FAITH
“Justification is not the process of becoming” – John Hannah
This doctrine, has provoked the most serious controversy in the history of the church.
It is the Protestant Reformation of the 16th Century - R.C. Sproul
You must never think of the Reformation solely as a negative thing, as a response to weakness.
It was also about our rediscovery of the gospel….But in part, the Reformation was the glorious
rediscovery of what God had already done for his people and would continue to do for them.
– Alister McGrath

3 FUNDAMENTALS OF THE FAITH (Romans 3:21-26)
1. THE SOURCE IS GOD (21-22)
• Righteousness is about God’s saving power
• Righteousness is about God’s gift to man

2. THE SECURITY IS JESUS (23-25)
• Justification means sin is cancelled and righteousness is credited
Justification is the instantaneous, legal transfer whereby God declares to
grant forgiveness and at the same time grants righteousness from God to
believers.
• Propitiation means God is appeased and man is cleaned
Propitiation is the righteous demands of God’s holy, just, wrath being satisfied
and at the same time the wiping away of man’s sin.

3. THE SYSTEM IS FAITH (26)
• Faith is the system not the source of salvation.
For by grace you have been saved through faith… (Ephesians 2:8 ESV)
• Faith is a gift so we can’t boast.
…And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. Not a result of works,
so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8 ESV)
