How to Serve Your Husband Spiritually

For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. —2 Chron. 16:9


Dear Precious Women at NVCC,
I am praying for you! May the Lord use these thoughts to encourage you as you seek to serve your husband.

Marriage first and foremost is a spiritual relationship. The Lord wants to be in the center of our lives personally and as a couple. As we grow in our walk with Him, we grow closer in our relationship with each other. The best GPS for our lives and our marriage is found in the Word of God. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path" (Prov. 3:5,6).

Too often we try to do “life” and “marriage” apart from God’s power, often leading to frustration and defeat. By ourselves, we have only human abilities to call on. My life was totally transformed when I understood the need to surrender complete control of my life to Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to fill me with His presence and power (Eph. 5:18). We cannot do God’s will without God’s power. But we can do whatever He puts before us with His power!
As a wife, I knew the importance of growing in my own personal walk with the Lord. I began praying for Gene and our marriage and saturating my heart with the promises in God’s Word. When the storm came (Gene suffered a stroke in 2008), God’s Word was my anchor. His resources were abundant and He remained faithful! Gene and I finished together on the same path where our journey began, with Jesus as our Rock, trusting in the Lord.

Jesus spoke about two different foundations for life: sand and rock; two legacies: devastation and permanence (Matt. 7:24-27). When you build your house upon the Rock, He will sustain you in the midst of the storms of life.

Invite the presence of God into your marriage on a daily basis. Give your heart completely to the Lord. Minister out of a full cup. As Jesus meets your needs, you will be the wife your husband needs!

Pray for and with your mate. Use the prayers in the Bible to pray for your husband; for example, Ephesians 1:15-21, 3:14-21; Philippians 1:9-11; Colossians 1:9-12. Insert his name as you pray for him! For example, in the passage below, I have inserted Gene’s name as I used to pray for him.

I pray that out of your glorious riches you may strengthen Gene with power through your Spirit in Gene’s inner being, so that Christ may dwell in Gene’s heart through faith. And I pray that Gene, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that Gene may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

When we pray using God’s Word, we can pray with confidence knowing that He hears and answers our prayers because we are praying according to His will. This should inspire and encourage us in our prayer life! The Lord is a promise keeper!

Take his needs to the ONE who knows how to best meet his needs. As you seek God together, you will also draw closer to each other as you develop a deep, close spiritual intimacy. You will please your Maker, bring honor to your husband, and find a personal contentedness that will never be matched!

In your marriage, begin and finish all things for the glory of God. Do everything to honor and reverence God in your lives. Hold everything sacred.

Pray: Lord, I confess that sometimes I find it hard to give you complete control of my life. I know that apart from you I can do nothing. I want to trust you with all of my heart and allow you to direct my path. I want to grow in my walk with you and I want my heart to be completely yours. Make me the woman of God that my husband needs and deserves.
